Public meetings in the Elk Grove Unified School District are conducted in accordance with the Ralph M. Brown Act (The Brown Act) which requires that all deliberations and actions by school boards be made in public unless a Board closed session is permitted by law.  Public participation, consistent with the Brown Act, is welcomed at Regular Board Meetings for both items not appearing on the agenda but are within the jurisdiction of the School Board and for items appearing on the agenda. Public Participation, consistent with the Brown Act, is welcomed at Special Board Meetings only on items appearing on the agenda.


Public Comment: We encourage you to attend the meetings and share your feedback with the Board.  Your active participation is valued and contributes to the decision-making process.
    1. During regular Board Meetings, Public Comment may be made On Items Not on the Board Agenda, but within the school district’s jurisdiction during the Public Comment section of the agenda. Please note that “If the public comments [are] on items not appearing on the posted agenda, the board cannot take action or discuss the public comments other than the Board President briefly acknowledging the comments.” (EGUSD Governance Handbook)
    2. Public comment may be made on All items that are on the agenda and will be heard when the selected item comes up on the agenda.
    3. Requests to make public comment will be accepted for an item up until the Board President introduces the item.
    4. Generally, members of the public will be given 3 minutes to address the board.
    5. If there are 15 or more comments on a specific item, the board will reduce individual comment time to 2 minutes each.
    6. If there are 30 or more comments on a specific item, the board will reduce individual comments to 1 minute each.
    7. Individuals may not defer their time to another individual speaker to increase their total speaking time.
